Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why Pell Farm Nursery?

Our privacy trees are grown right here on our farm and hand dug with care. They are accustomed to New England winters and will thrive with proper care. We hand shear out trees at 5 feet, which forces them to create a denser root system. This helps them establish a strong root system when replanted.

  • When should I plant?

Early spring (April-May) or early fall (September-October) are generally the best times to plant. Regardless of when you plant, proper watering the first full year is most important.

  • How should I plant my trees?

Trees should be planted in a hole that is slightly wider than the root ball, and an equal depth to the root ball. Planting too deep can kill your tree. Once a tree is placed, it is hard to raise. It is better to plant slightly above the soil line and pack soil around the root ball to create a berm.

Our trees are balled and burlapped with 100% cotton, biodegradeable string. Leaving the burlap on the root ball helps keep the root system together. The roots will grow through the burlap. We recommend removing the burlap from the top portion of the root ball to ensure that water does not sit close to the trunk and cause rot.

  • How far apart should I space my privacy trees?

Our spacing recommendations vary by tree. Measuring from the center of the trunk to the center of the next trunk, the recommendations are as follows:

    Dark American - 4 feet

    Emerald Green - 2.5 feet

    Green Giant - 5 feet

    Hemlock - 5 feet

  • How often should I water my newly planted trees?

Trees need to be watered for the first full year to establish a healthy root system.

We recommend setting up a soaker hose and timer system. Ensure the soaker hose is putting out the same amount of water the entire length of the planting area.

For spring and fall, water heavily (4-6 hours) once a week. During the summer, water heavily (4-6 hours) two or three times a week.

Daily watering can cause root rot and will kill the tree.

  • How do you measure your privacy trees?

We size our trees generously. We measure from the top of the root ball to the full part of the tree, not the very top.

  • Do you offer delivery?

Unfortunately, we do not have the staffing to offer delivery at this time. We recommend renting a box truck or hiring a landscaper to pick-up trees. We will load the trees for you, but it is always the drivers responsibility to secure their load.

  • Do you have a guarantee

Plants require proper care and conditions to thrive. Our staff ensure that all material being sold is in healthy condition. For that reason, we do not offer a guarantee. If you suspect any issue please reach out to us as soon as possible with purchase information and a picture. We will do our best to accomodate you.
